Extreme E supports Global Goals Week

The Global Goals Week is an annual seven-day period of action, awareness, and accountability for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Global Goals Week is a shared commitment between more than 170 partners across civil society, business, academia, and the UN system to accelerate action on the SDGs. It is also an opportunity to speak out as one voice, share ideas and transformative solutions to global challenges.

During Global Goals Week, these partners will mobilise their communities, with precedence on the Global Goals, and supercharge solutions for people and planet alike. It is fitting that Extreme E will be racing upon the conclusion Global Goals Week at the Antofagasta Minerals Copper X Prix in Chile (24-25 September), raising awareness of the climate crisis through the power of high-octane motorsport.

Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Extreme E, said: “Sport has a tremendous role to play in raising awareness and inspiring us all to action in the fight against the climate crisis, this is one of our foundations we built Extreme E upon, and I am proud that we continue to showcase the importance of the Global Goals across our championship.

“The fact that we will be racing during Global Goals Week is extremely powerful for us – it is a further opportunity to use our unique platform as a sport for purpose racing series to highlight the global challenges we face and the need for a more sustainable future for all.”

The 17 Global Goals are an ambitious roadmap to address poverty, inequality, and climate change, and every single one of us has the power to make a difference. Extreme E supports many of them. For example, Goal Five - gender equality - via its gender equal racing format, a world-first in motorsport. Plus, Goal Nine - industry, innovation and infrastructure - by showcasing new technologies that can help accelerate the shift to clean energy.

Goals 14 and 15 - life below water and life on land – apply to Extreme E’s various legacy programmes that leave long-lasting positive impacts in the locations in which the series races, right through to goal 13 - climate action - one of the biggest driving forces behind the championship.

All 17 of the Goals are for everyone, everywhere. Like Extreme E, they reach the far corners of the planet, from icecaps to islands and deserts to deep oceans. As we enter the uncharted territories of our planet’s future, these SDGs provide the framework to address our greatest challenges.

Each Goal has a series of targets, giving all of us – from individuals and civil society to governments and businesses – a to-do list for what we need to do to achieve this world changing plan.

Extreme E’s continued mission is to inspire people, communities and governments all over the world to act and embark on our greatest journey yet.

Kevin Hansen, JBXE, said: “I think the Global Goals are important as they create a guideline to follow for people on a global scale, no matter your background. It stretches to human rights and combating poverty too, creating a real baseline for all of us to follow.

“Extreme E’s Legacy Programmes are key to bringing the issues regarding climate change closer to people’s awareness. It’s important we use the excitement of sport as a platform to highlight these things even further. By taking part in the series’ Legacy Programmes, you really get to see how each location we visit is suffering and what needs to be done to help and show people around the world how we can affect change. It is important to raise these issues to a much wider audience.

“Through my family’s company, Hansen Motorsport, we also focus on the Global Goals. We want to demonstrate a real commitment to sustainability as for us it is key. We go to different locations to race, but it doesn’t matter where you travel as there is always a climate problem. It is important we highlight these issues in both Extreme E and our Rallycross team and be an advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals in each location. There is always something we can do – if everyone works together, we can really impact climate change.”

Today marks the beginning of Global Goals Week (16-25 September), an initiative which pioneering sport for purpose series Extreme E is proud to support.
