Extreme E awarded FIA International Series status
Extreme E, the pioneering electric off-road motor racing series, reached another milestone today after it was officially granted status as an FIA International Series.
The decision was made during the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC), hosted by FIA President Jean Todt.
Alejandro Agag, CEO of Extreme E, said: “All of us at Extreme E are delighted to have this seal of approval and be officially classified as an FIA International Series. We’ve been working hard towards this goal and the speed of recognition by the FIA gives us all a great confidence boost as we prepare to start our first season in 2021.
“This certification confirms that Extreme E will operate to FIA international standards and we will also benefit greatly from the valuable input of the FIA and the ACM (Auto Club de Monaco). The FIA’s decades of sporting and technical expertise will be a great addition as we get started on this exciting new sporting journey together.”
Extreme E has attracted huge momentum in the motorsport world since its launch in January 2019 and has already celebrated many important milestones.
Its cutting edge E-SUV, ODYSSEY 21, which can go from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds, at gradients of up to 130 percent has received impressive reaction from world-class drivers who have tested it, including those competing at the highest level in Formula One, Dakar Rally, FIA World Rally, FIA World Rallycross, and Formula E.
The series has already attracted a starting grid of global power-house teams. These include Andretti United, backed by Michael Andretti and Zak Brown; X44 by Six-Time Formula One Champion Lewis Hamilton; Chip Ganassi Racing from the US; Abt and HWA from Germany; Veloce Racing, backed by Formula E Double Champion Jean Eric-Vergne and Adrian Newey; current Formula E Three Time Champions Techeetah; and QEV Technologies from Spain.
Extreme E will showcase electric SUVs and futuristic technologies in some of the world’s most remote and extreme environments. This five-event global voyage will utilise its sporting platform for the purpose of promoting electrification, sustainability, and equality.
Its goal is highlight the impact of climate change in some of the world’s most remote environments, promote the adoption of electric vehicles to pave the way for a lower carbon future, and provide a world-first gender equal motorsport platform.
Not only that, Extreme E is also helping the car industry to develop future-facing technology using racing as a platform for road innovation, which accelerates change ten-fold.
Extreme E kicks off in early 2021. Viewers will be able to watch all the action live on the BBC (UK), Discovery (Europe and North America), FOX Sports (United States, Canada and the Caribbean), FOX Sports Asia (Southeast Asia), FOX Sports Australia, Mediaset (Italy), Sony India (Indian subcontinent), TVNZ (New Zealand), RTM (Malaysia), Dubai Sports (Middle East), RDS (Canada), China Sports Zhibo.tv (China), RTL 7 (The Netherlands), ORF (Austria), ESPN Africa and StarTimes (Africa), Saran (Turkey) and BTRC (Belarus).
