Extreme E nominated at edie Net-Zero awards

The edie Net-Zero Awards were launched to recognise the surge of corporate action to accelerate the net-zero transition through specific projects and initiatives, celebrating the decarbonisation efforts and achievements of businesses and climate experts. Now in its second year, the edie Net-Zero Awards recognise and reward the individuals and organisations spearheading the UK’s transition towards a net-zero carbon economy.

Extreme E and ENOWA have been nominated as a result of their efforts in transforming the championship’s energy production approach, which includes the use of ENOWA’s Hydrogen Fuel Cell System, leveraging solar and green hydrogen energy where possible.

Through its ‘first of its kind’ Hydrogen Fuel Cell System, ENOWA is able to support the championship operate sustainable energy practices in some of the world’s most remote locations. The unique system is one of the world’s largest commercial operating fuel cells, which aligns with the championship showcasing pioneering environmentally-conscious innovation.

At the recent Hydro X Prix in Scotland, Extreme E and ENOWA celebrated a motorsport milestone by producing 80 per cent of the event site power with hydrogen fuel cells. Using 700kg of green hydrogen supplied by ENOWA and supported by Kaizen Clean Energy, the site used the 11 Megawatt-hours (MWh) produced to support car charging, catering, and event control power.

The energy produced equated to powering 1,000 UK homes for a day, or charging EVs at the site more than 350 times. This supports Extreme E’s long-term plan to be motorsport’s first fully renewably powered event.

The winners will be revealed at the edie Net-Zero Awards ceremony which takes place on Friday 29 November 2024 in London.

Ali Russell, Managing Director of Extreme E, said: “We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the edie Net-Zero Awards and be shortlisted for Renewable Energy Project of the Year. “We have always pushed the boundaries regarding sustainable innovation, and our efforts in delivering motorsport industry-leading race site infrastructure alongside ENOWA are a testament to that. A primary objective of Extreme E is to increase its production of clean energy for site power and we have seen those efforts develop year-on-year.”
