Extreme E will supports The Nature Conservancy’s Forest Restoration programme in Pará to secure 100 hectares of existing forest, restoring 100 hectares of native forest and maintaining more than 200 hectares of a cocoa-based agroforestry programme by working with 50 local smallholders.
With more than 24 years of conservation work across the Amazon, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has a deep understanding of the major drivers of deforestation in the region as well as the opportunities for restoration, and this initiative works directly with local farmers to protect and reforest the Amazon.

In May 2022, Extreme E visited TNC and the families being supported by the project.
Support from Extreme E has enabled the following achievements:
- Increased resources to implement agroforestry systems
- The seedling nursery (where seeds and young plants are created and grown) in Tucumã, which provides local farmers with the plants they need to implement agroforestry systems, has doubled its capacity and now produces 100,000 seedlings.
- TNC has started training farmers on seed collection which is an important step to establish a seed collector ́s network. Seed collectors will sell what they have collected to TNC, who then deliver them to farmers, thus ensuring diverse agroforestry systems.
- Increased livelihoods and food security for 50 smallholder families
- 50 smallholder families have been trained on cocoa-based agroforestry systems. They are now growing timber and fruit trees and other crop species (corn, cassava, beans) that provide the shade and soil nutrients cocoa trees security and income.
- Restoration of the Amazon Rainforest
- 100 hectares of cocoa-based agroforestry systems have been implemented
- 100 hectares of unproductive land are under restoration
- Increased resources to implement agroforestry systems
