The opening round will take place on the shores of the Red Sea close to the location of the 2022 NEOM Beach Games, which hosted over 500 athletes from 25 countries.
For the Desert X Prix 2023, Extreme E will be putting a spotlight on NEOM’s pioneering vision of sustainable living, with a particular focus on highlighting renewable hydrogen solutions, and preserving biodiversity in this remote desert region.
-
local environment
NEOM is a region in northwest Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea with long beaches, valleys and deserts cradled by mountains all located in northwest Saudi Arabia with breathtakingly diverse terrain, this unique geographical location enjoys a temperate climate. Cool winds from the Red Sea creates more desirable temperatures – on average around 10°C cooler than surrounding areas.
Scenic snowcapped mountains reaching up to 2,500m, with views across the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea with more than 450 km of coastline and spectacular islands.
-
racing conditions
Season 3 will deliver fresh faces, and an exciting new team as superstar DJ Carl Cox enters the championship, and even more thrilling wheel-to-wheel action showcased across some of the toughest and most environmentally challenged terrains on the planet.
Teams will once again face a mostly sandy terrain, though a very different challenge and location to the deserts of the series’ past two visits to Saudi Arabia. Like last year, outside temperature will also affect the ground surface as the early mornings in NEOM in February will be cooler than the teams experienced last season.
Many of the drivers will have experienced a shoreline course before, at Season 1’s Ocean X Prix in Senegal in 2021, but all will have to be at the top of their game to meet the unique demands of this terrain, especially after seeing how the drivers were put to the test in NEOM last Season.
-

LOCATION
The Hydro X Prix in Scotland represents an exciting return home for the sport for purpose series as it delivers its third season, creating the opportunity to highlight climate issues and solutions that are not just global, but also right on
our doorstep.
The restored former coal mine, which is about to undergo the next phase of its major transformation into a Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) plant and wind farm, will provide a poignant backdrop for the sport which uses its platform to raise awareness of climate change and
global solutions.
-
local environment
Scotland is located in the northern part of the United Kingdom, and is known for its unique and diverse environment. Scotland's landscape includes rugged mountains, rolling hills, deep valleys, and stunning coastline. The country is home to numerous lochs, rivers, and forests, including the famous Caledonian Forest, which is one of the few remaining ancient woodlands in Europe. Scotland also has a rich and varied wildlife population, with species such as red deer, golden eagles, otters, and seals found across the country.
However, Scotland's environment is not without its challenges, including issues related to climate change, land use, and biodiversity loss, which are being addressed through a range of conservation efforts and sustainable
development initiatives.

Racing in Scotland will be as exciting as ever with a course currently being designed that will include the natural obstacles of the Scottish terrain while putting the all-electric ODYSSEY 21 vehicle to the test.
The track will be a combination of both fast sections on grass as well as drops into a quarry.
More information coming soon for course conditions.
-
Dumfries & Galloway
The Extreme E race site will play homage to the much needed transition of an old coal mine which is being given a new and exciting lease of life as a hydro-project, aiming to provide a fully renewable energy source for the region for centuries to come.
-
SOLUTIONS HIGHLIGHTED
As an off-road rally series which focuses on the promotion of electric vehicles and clean energy innovations, the old mine is the perfect natural amphitheatre to showcase the necessary industry transition to move from fossil fuels to clean energy futures. It will also impactfully act as an example of the important role water can play in future renewables and healthy conservation.
The Hydro project will enhance and aid the balancing of the UK power system, enabling the integration of more renewable generated energy into the country. Once constructed, the Pump Storage Hydropower plant will supply 210 MW with eight hours of storage capacity. 1MW is enough to supply the average power requirement of 2,000 homes. Utilising two 105 MW reversible hydro-turbines, the site will store power during periods of excess energy supply and release stored energy at times of peak demand.
The wind farm being built in conjunction with the plant will comprise of eight 4.2 MW turbines and will have the ability, via a direct connection, to power the Pump Storage Hydropower plant.

LEGACY
Extreme E will also embark on a community led project of its own, as part of its Legacy Programme, to implement a multi-stage project, focused on mitigating climate change effects on local salmon stocks.
From the impactful re-planting of over a thousand trees, to using innovative technologies being implemented by Official Technology Partner Vodafone Business to monitor water quality and temperatures, Extreme E will focus on a long-term transformation of the River Nith area that will protect the salmon stocks so important to local industries.
For centuries, the River Nith has been home to one of Scotland’s most iconic species, the Atlantic Salmon. However, the number of adult salmon returning to Scottish rivers has declined steeply in the last couple of decades due to rising temperatures and rainfall levels. Climate change is having an increasing impact on the salmon’s lifecycle, both in the marine and freshwater environment. Reversing some of the habitat degradation that has occurred on the river systems is one way of helping to ensure that Atlantic salmon continue to be part of Scottish heritage into the future.
Planting native trees along the riverbank will help stabilise the river embankments, reducing soil erosion and fish mortality. Another enormous benefit of establishing native trees along the length of a watercourse is the shade that is cast onto the water. As we experience more regular, prolonged droughts, the resulting increase in water temperatures can quickly rise above the upper threshold for juvenile salmonids causing large losses during the summer months.
To help with the Trust’s regular monitoring, our Official Technology Partner Vodafone Business will also be providing them Hydrosensors and temperature monitors to help monitor water quality and temperature, Extreme E will focus on a long-term transformation of the River Nith area that will protect the Atlantic salmon stocks so important to local industries.

Extreme E returns to Sardinia, Italy for the long-anticipated return of the Island X Prix.
With two years of racing legacy already under its belt, Extreme E's third visit to 'The Island' will be sure to reignite past rivalries and give a chance for the reigning champions to defend their victory streak.
-
LOCATION
The purpose of Extreme E is to use electric motorsport to raise awareness of climate change and highlight the advantages of low carbon vehicles.
However, this crisis isn't limited to remote places. It's now impacting the planet as a whole, with areas like Sardinia facing rising temperatures, heatwaves, and wildfires.
-
Racing Conditions
The Island X Prix returns to the historic Army Training area at Capo Teulad in Sulcis-Iglesiente in the island's southwest. The three-kilometer Teulada route offers a challenging contrast to the previous round, featuring a compact surface with rocks, bushes, and cracking riverbeds due to heat.
The Summer heat will create drier terrain, adding natural obstacles for drivers. The track aims to offer overtaking opportunities, fast sections, and tight corners, so the course walk prior to the race will be crucial for drivers to best prepare for race day.
The Island X Prix will be hosted by Extreme E in collaboration with Automobile Club d’Italia, Sardinia's Tourism Department, Ministry of Defense, and the Italian Army.

Our Legacy Project in Sardinia
Our latest Legacy Programme in Sardinia focuses on blue and green carbon storage. In July 2021, Italy witnessed an unprecedented surge of 13,000 wildfires. This catastrophe wreaked havoc on livelihoods and nature, obliterating pastures, farmlands, and countless animals, including 30 million bees. Rebuilding the affected 20,000 hectares is estimated to take up to 15 years.
Beneath the waves of the Meditteranean Sea, a mere hectare of seagrass can yield 100,000 litres of oxygen every single day, as calculated by the Smithsonian Institute. However, these vital seagrass ecosystems are racing towards decline, with 29% already lost globally, with a further 20-30% predicted within a century.
-
The Problem
In the 2023 Island X Prix, Extreme E persists in reducing future damage and restoring past destruction.
The series focuses on highlighting planetary warming, linked to widespread wildfires across Europe, America, and Australia. Collaborating with MEDSEA, a local NGO, Extreme E aids Southern Sardinia's forest restoration, tracking progress in the green carbon initiative. They also revisit the blue carbon project centered on Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows—an oceanic rainforest that remarkably stores more CO2 than its terrestrial counterpart.
Green Carbon
The first project in our Sardinian legacy initiaive will include returning to the communities impacted by the devastating wildfires in 2021. In 2021, fires blazed through 20,000 hectares of land, displaced over 1,000 people and killed around 30 million bees. Extreme E continues to help restore the historic olive groves lost to the wildfires in these areas and run a Fire Prevention Campaign within the local communities on forest fire prevention. We will also be revisiting to see the results of the tree planting over the past two years.
Blue Carbon
The second project aids Posidonia oceanica (seagrass) conservation, countering negative impacts of Blue Carbon in the Mediterranean. This crucial plant sequesters harmful 'Blue Carbon' and is endangered.
Seagrass is among the world's fastest declining ecosystems. Extreme E teams up with MEDSEA to analyze and replant seagrass along degraded Sardinian shores. Despite covering just 0.2% of the ocean floor, seagrass holds 10% of ocean carbon and can capture 30% more from the atmosphere than tropical rainforests. Safeguarding seagrass is pivotal against the climate crisis.
For two years, Extreme E collaborated with MEDSEA to restore Posidonia oceanica beds in Sardinia's Marine Protected Areas. This partnership continues into a third season.
